How to choose the right thickness for a sports floor

The thickness of the sports floor is an essential aspect that influences not only the performance of athletes, but also their safety. Each type of sporting activity has specific needs and choosing the right thickness of rubber flooring can make the difference between a pleasant experience and a risky one. For example, for sports such as basketball, where jumps are frequent, a greater thickness is recommended to ensure adequate shock absorption. On the contrary, for less intense activities such as yoga or pilates, a smaller thickness may be sufficient.

The comfort and performance of athletes are directly influenced by the thickness of the flooring. A floor that is too thin can lead to discomfort and poor performance, while an adequate thickness guarantees optimal support. For example, in the residential projects we have done, we have observed that athletes who practiced on rubber floors of appropriate thickness reported a noticeable improvement in their performance. We use professional equipment from renowned brands such as Bosch and DeWalt to ensure every detail is done with precision.

International standards for the thickness of sports floors vary depending on the type of sport practiced. For example, the International Basketball Federation recommends a minimum thickness of 6 mm for basketball courts, while a minimum thickness of 8 mm is recommended for volleyball courts. These standards are essential to ensuring a safe and high-performance gaming environment.

When comparing the thickness of rubber flooring to other types of flooring, you will find that rubber provides superior shock absorption and increased durability. Wooden floors, for example, may be more aesthetically pleasing, but they don’t offer the same protection against injuries. As part of our work, we use specialist Wolf and Janser machines to cut and install rubber flooring, ensuring each project meets the highest quality standards.

The thickness of the floor also influences its durability. A thicker floor will resist wear and tear better and will require less maintenance in the long run. In a recent project for a residential complex in Bihor, we opted for a thickness of 10 mm for the fitness area, which resulted in greater durability and satisfaction for our customers.

Each athlete has an optimal thickness recommended for his flooring. For example, for basketball a thickness of 6-10 mm is recommended, while for volleyball it is ideal to use a thickness of 8-12 mm. Handball, having similar requirements to basketball, benefits from the same specifications. These details are essential when tackling residential projects that include gyms or recreational areas.

The role of thickness in shock absorption is fundamental for the prevention of injuries. A rubber floor of adequate thickness will reduce the impact on athletes’ joints, minimizing the risk of injury. In a project carried out for the Passau County Hospital, we implemented a rubber floor with an optimal thickness which contributed to the creation of a safe environment for the hospitalization of patients.

Choosing the right thickness also depends on the type of substrate on which the flooring will be laid. For example, if the base is made of concrete, a greater thickness is recommended to compensate for its rigidity. Conversely, a wooden subfloor may allow the use of a lower thickness. We at RATGROUP SRL have the necessary experience to evaluate each situation individually and offer customized solutions.

Temperature can affect the performance of sports floors. Rubber floors can become stiffer in cold temperatures, which can affect athlete comfort. It is important to consider climate conditions when choosing shims for residential or commercial projects.

Tests and case studies have shown that the thickness of sports floors has a significant impact on overall performance. We conducted comparative studies between different thicknesses of rubber flooring and noticed that athletes who trained on thicker flooring achieved better results in competitions.

Our advice for choosing the right thickness varies depending on the intensive or occasional use of the space. For frequent use gyms a greater thickness is essential, while for occasional use you can opt for a smaller thickness. This is an approach we have applied to various residential and commercial projects.
